Bioidentical Hormones

What is bioidentical hormone therapy?

Bioidentical hormone therapy is the use of synthetic hormones designed to mimic human hormones almost exactly. Each bio-identical hormone used for therapy is selected specifically for you, which allows your body to tolerate it better than mass-produced hormone therapy.

At Pasadena Pellet Therapy, bioidentical hormones are administered through pellets placed just under the skin on your hip or flank. This placement allows for a slow, direct release of the hormones into your bloodstream 24 hours a day.

Bioidentical hormone therapy includes:

Estradiol - the most important female hormone. Decreases or fluctuating levels lead to many symptoms

Progesterone - used in conjunction with estrogen for some women

Testosterone - used in men and women who want to increase their sex drive, energy levels and more

Estrone - a byproduct of estrogen metabolism that can cause increased body fat. We can help lower this.

How does bioidentical hormone therapy help men?

The medical staff at Pasadena Pellet Therapy prescribe bio-identical testosterone hormone therapy to assist with the side effects associated with low testosterone (Low T). Men produce testosterone in their testes. With age, the amount of hormone naturally decreases.

Low T can cause:
  • Reduced sex drive
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • Low sperm count
  • Loss of body hair, muscle mass, and strength
  • Low energy, increased fatigue
  • Increased body fat
  • Enlarged breasts
For men, pellet therapy takes between two to four weeks to be effective and needs to be repeated about every six months to maintain the testosterone blood levels.

How does bioidentical hormone therapy help women?

Bioidentical hormone therapy can help with low sex drive, low energy, worse PMS, mood swings, peri-menopause and menopause. Over one million women — 40% of all prescriptions for hormone therapy in women who are in menopause — use bio-identical hormone therapy.

Menopause causes a woman’s body to decrease the amount of estrogen and progesterone it produces, causing your menstrual periods to stop. However, it also leads to uncomfortable symptoms, including:
  • Hot flashes and sweating
  • Vaginal dryness and painful sex
  • Mood swings, anxiety or depression
  • Sleep problems, fatigue or low energy
  • Decreased libido
It usually takes a week or two for pellet therapy to become effective. Optimum results take about three weeks and reinsertion is usually about every three to four months.
